The Song of Francis and the Animals

One of the first faith communities I worked for owned a very stubborn donkey, Rusty. Rusty was expected to show up for many events during the year, including a blessing of the animals. Although delighted to spend time with Rusty and many other pets, the first October this happened, I was not sure why we prayed for them annually. I quickly learned that it is associated with The Feast of Francis of Assisi on October 4.

If, like me, you've ever wondered why Francis of Assisi is associated with animals, I highly recommend "The Song of Francis and the Animals" by Pat Mora and David Frampton. Mora's words and Frampton's woodcuts invite the reader into a glimpse of St. Francis's peaceful relationship with the world around him, including the Wolf of Gubbio.
